He's still not willing to support Harvard's physical expansion or its tax breaks, but Cambridge Mayor Alfred E. Vellucci has come out in favor of the Harvard football team in this year's battle against Yale.
The endorsement should not be taken for granted. The man who once proposed paving Harvard Yard for a parking lot has been known to send congratulatory telegrams to the Elis.
But in a note given to The Crimson Monday night, Vellucci promised the Harvard girders a spaghetti dinner if they beat Yale in this year's November classic.
The reason for the Cambridge mayor's change of heart? The mayor of New Haven will be coming to Harvard Stadium this year to root for the Elis, and, as in any battle involving politicians, Vellucci would hate to lose.
