Ivy League Wins Just One of Eight Games On First Weekend of Intersectional Play

The first week of intersectional play became a nightmare for the Ivy League, as the green-walled institutions endured a miserable 1-7 Saturday.

Princeton 46, Bucknell 28

The sole Ivy victory looked like a certain loss when the visiting Pennsylvanians took a 28-0 first-half advantage at Princeton, N.J. But Tiger sophomore quarterback Doug Butler made the most of his first varsity start, throwing for 411 yards and a school-record five touchdowns to down Bucknell, 46-28, and even Princeton's record at 1-1.

UConn 38, Yale 12

Junior safety Matt Latham returned two punts for touchdowns and set up a third score with an interception to lead Connecticut to a 38-12 thrashing of Yale at the Yale Bowl.

UConn running back Billy Parks rushed for 140 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Yale scored its points on two Bill Moore field goals and an Israel Rosales-to-Mare-Quinlivan touchdown pass.

The Huskies are 1-2; the Elis are 0-2.

URI 30, Brown 16

Quarterback Dave Wienke completed 16 of 34 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown to lead Rhode Island past intrastate rival Brown, 30-16, ht Providence, R.I.

A 64-yard Wienke touchdown pass to Damcon Reilly midway through the third quarter clinched the Rams' first Governor's Cup in five years. Brown's record is now 1-1; URI is 3-0.

Lafayette 34, Columbia 29

Craig Williams three yard plunge with 71 seconds remaining lifted Lafayette to a 34-29 victory over Columbia at Easton, Pa. Leopard quarterback Frank Novak fired four touchdown passes and completed 23 of 34 for 306 yards.

Columbia came back from a 21-0 first-quarter deficit to take a 29-28 lead with six minutes to go in the game on an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Witkowski to tight end Dan Upperco. Witkowski connected with Don Lewis for the two point conversion.

The setback dropped Columbia's record to 0-2; Lafayette is 3-0.

Army 13, Dartmouth 12

A school-recent four field goals by Dartmouth's Craig Saltzgaber in the first half wasn't enough to prevent an Army comeback victory at West Point, N.Y. The Cadets held the Big Green to minds one yard total offense in the second half, and Dartmouth quarter back Frank Polsinello fell victim to seven second-half sacks and nine on the day.

Army starting quarterback Rob Healy could only lead his squad to three points in the first half, but sophomore backup Bill Turner had considerably more success in the second. Craig Stopa's 34-yard fourth-quarter field goal gave the Cadets their first lead of the season, Dartmouth is now 1-1; Army is 1-2.

Delaware 40, Penn 7

John Carson ran for 69 yards and John Merklinger for 68 as Delaware overran Penn, 40-7, at Newark, Del.

The Fightin Blue Hens held Penn to a total of 43 yards on the ground. Delaware quarterback B.J. Webster completed 11 of 16 for three touchdowns, and the Bens rushed for 315 yards.

Penn is now 1-1.

Colgate 60, Cornell 7

Cornell's home opener was all Colgate, as the Red Raiders trounced the Big Red. 60-7 at Ithaca, N.Y.

First year Cornell Coach Marie Baugham watched Colgate score 32 second half points to blow open the game. Red Raider quarterback Steve Calabria passed for three touchdowns and ran for another.

Colgate upped its record to 3-0; Cornell fell to 0-2.
