Rivera Homers Twice as Batmen Party, 13-2

Kay Gets 20th Birthday Gift: His First Collegiate Home Run

By Mike Knobler, Special to The Crimson

CHESTNUT HILL--Bobby Kay celebrated his 20th birthday. Jim Chenevey his first college start Gaylord Lyman celebrated his recovery from the flu; Tony DiCesare his incredible hitting streak. Elliott Rivera and Doug Sutton just celebrated.

Together, the Harvard baseball team threw a 13-2 party at Boston College's Shea Field yesterday, and a good game was had by all.

*Kay socked a three-run blast to left in the sixth inning for his first college homer. The newly-legal Kay now has something to drink about, L'chaim.

*Rivera rocketed leadoff home runs in the sixth and seventh innings, earning himself the team lead in gopher balls (five). His four rbi's upped his season total to 18 (tied with Jim DePalo).

*DiCesare slapped four hits in five at bats, raising his team-leading average to .404. His doubles made him the leader in that category (five). In his last six games he has hit at a .591 clip.

*Lyman, who couldn't play Saturday at Penn because of the flu, enjoyed his best outing of the year yesterday, with three hits in four atbats, a double and an rbi.

*Chenevey fanned six in his first 3 2/3 innings as a starter. He allowed just two hits and one run.

*Sutton earned his second collegiate victory with the finest performance of his career. The sophomore yielded just three hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings. "That's how we expected Doug to pitch." Crimson Coach Alex Nahigian said after the game. "That's a big plus for us." With reliever Cecil Cox still nursing a sore arm. Nahigian needs bullpen help for this weekend's Eastern League contests at second-place Yale and fourth-place Brown.

There is good news about Kay's arm, too. The sophomore made three errors in Friday's opener at Columbia, and his arm was sore enough Saturday that he had to play second against Penn: Yesterday things were different.

"That's the least pain I've had throwing since the start of the year," Kay said.

The game was scoreless when Lyman led off the third with a single, and right fielder Chris McAndrews sacrificed him to second One out later, Kay and DePaolo walked to load the bases. Rivera stroked a two-run double to left center.

Rivera later said the double meant as much as his two homers. "I haven't been coming through in the clutch as much as I wanted to," the 367 hitter said.

The Crimson held a 2-1 edge after five innings, but Rivera's leadoff drive over the left field fence quickly signalled the beginning of Eagle starter Carl Anderson's end. Two cuts later DiCesare, Lyman. McAndrews and center fielder Bruce Weller strung together four singles to give Harvard a 5-1 lead. Then came Kay's later, and Anderson left the game trailing 8-1.

The Crimson added three more in the seventh on Rivera a second homer, a Mickey Maspons walk, a DiCesare single, a Lyman two-bagger and a McAndrews rbi grounder to short. In the eighth a Chris Schindler single, a Maspons fielder's choice, a Jay McNamara walk and a DiCesare double produced Harvard's 12th run. A Paul Vallena's single Weller's third walk of the day and Kay's rbi single finished off the scoring in the ninth.

THE NOTEBOOK Harvard is now 13.3 overall, 4-1 in the Greater Boston League. The Crimson had hoped to face Princeton in a make-up doubleheader Tuesday. Brandeis, Harvard's scheduled opponent, agreed to reschedule, but Princeton decided not to come Brandeis, after agreeing not to play Tuesday, would not agree to return to the previous schedule. The result: Harvard will probably play Princeton only if necessary to determine the Eastern League Champion. The Crimson's scheduled May 13 game at Brandeis becomes a doubleheader.
