NEW YORK--Anders Jarryd of Sweden and Johan Kriek last night battled their way into the quarterfinals of the $400,000 Volvo Masters tennis championships.
The 23-year-old Jarryd, taking command at the ngt, elminated his Davis Cup leammate Henrik Sundstrom 6-4, 6-1, while Kriek beat back the challenge of young Aaron Krickstein 7-5, 6-3.
With their opening-round victories in this elite 12-player, season-ending event, Jarryd will face top-seeded John McEnroe tomorrow night and Kriek will take on Sweden's Mats Wilander, the No. 4 seed, tomorrow afternoon.
The first round will be completed tonight, when Sweden's Joakim Nystrom plays Vitas Gerulaitis and Eliot Teltscher battles Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia.
