W. Cagers To Host Tourney

With the men's basketball team playing in the Ameritus Classic at Nebraska and the men's hockey team facing off at Colgate and Cornell this weekend, the feature athletic event on campus this weekend promises to be the Harvard Invitational women's basketball tournament starting today at Briggs Cage.

The Crimson (0-2) will be looking to rebound from its two losses to Cal-Santa Barbara and Santa Clara when it opens against Colgate (0-2) today at 3 p.m.

The Red Raiders have been a one-woman show so far this year, with Co-Captain forward Suzanne Bowen providing the entertainment. The 5-ft., 11-in. junior led the team with 16 points and 11 rebounds in a 49-48 loss to Lafayette and then tallied 34 points and snared 21 rebounds in a 68-65 loss to Cornell. No other Colgate player is averaging in double figures. Today's game may mark the season debut of 5-ft., 11-in. forward Lolita Paegle, who hails from Riga, Latvia, in the Soviet Union.

In today's 1 p.m. semifinal, Connecticut (2-1) faces the Jaspers of Manhattan (3-1). The Huskies have beaten Penn State, 93-84, in overtime and Holy Cross, 73-71, while losing to nationally-ranked Iowa, 81-49, in theHawkeye Classic. Junior Kerry Bascom (21 pointsand 9.3 rebounds per game) and senior Co-CaptainKris Lamb (11.7 p.p.g. and 7.3 r.p.g.) are themain threats for UConn. Both are close to scoringtheir 1000th career point--Bascom has 945 pointsand Lamb has 979.

The Jaspers, may still have some adjusting todo to cold weather after playing in the Sun andFun Classic hosted by Florida International, whereManhattan won two of three games. A 69-54 loss tothe host team was sandwiched between wins overAmerican University and Youngs-town State. LastWednesday night, the Jaspers topped Columbia,62-52.
