* Despite recent peace initiatives, all eyes are on the Arabian desert as the beginning of a ground war approaches. A high-ranking French official said Iraq would be given until today to respond to the Soviet peace proposal. President Bush did not make any public comment on the war yesterday.

* Desert Storm commander Gen. Schwarzkopf said the Iraqi army was "on the verge of collapse." Other U.S. officers said they still predict a bloody ground war.
