Search for New Coach Waits

Committee to Find Restic's Replacement Not Yet Finalized

By John B. Trainer

The athletic department has yet to name a search committee to find a replacement for retiring Head Football Coach Joe Restic, department officials said Wednesday.

Athletic Director Bill Cleary '56, who said last Friday that he would select a committee by the end of this week, said it would probably take another 10 days to complete the list of members.

"We are still in the process of selecting a search committee," Clearly said in a statement. "It will be about 10 days before we can finalize the list."

A rough version of this committee met on Tuesday, according to junior Brian Ramer, the captain of the football team, who was present at the meeting. Ramer would not say who was at the meeting besides Clearly and himself, but he called the search committee "pretty much set."

Ramer also said the search committee would include non-athletic department officials, but would not elaborate.

No members of the Standing Faculty Committee on Athletics contacted by the Crimson said they attended Tuesday's meeting. Committee members contacted said they had little knowledge of the affair.

"I don't know a thing," said Dean of Students Archie C. Epps III, who is on the committee.

Most referred questions to McKay Professor of Computer Science Harry Lewis '68, the committee chair.

Lewis did not return repeated phone calls yesterday.

The search committee will be hiring Harvard's first new football coach in 22 years. Possible candidates mentioned for Restic's job are Tulane Coach Buddy leevens, Northeastern Coach Barry Gallup, Fordham Coach Larry Glueck and former Boston College Coach Jack Bicknell.
