New Women's Group Begun

A group calling itself the "Lynx" invited a number of Harvard women to a tea in downtown Boston last week, prompting some to question whether the event's sponsor is a new all-female final club.

Organizers are keeping the details and official status of the news club quiet.

The women were asked to tea at the Ritz Carlton last Wednesday, according to an invitation delivered to a Harvard woman, obtained by The Crimson yesterday.

The invitation was sent by the "president and members" of the Lynx.

women were directed to meet in the lobby of the Charles Hotel at 4 p.m. the day of the tea and were asked to "R.S.V.P. Melissa Blair Fisher at 3-1158."

Contacted at the number on the invitation, Melissa B. Fisher '94 said she knew nothing about the Lynx.

"I have no idea what you're taking about," Fisher said.

Fisher is the acting rush chair and a founding member of a local chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta, a "women's fraternity" formed by Harvard undergraduates last January.

Another member of Theta, Margaret L. Roberts '96, is also involved with the creation of the Lynx, sources said. Roberts is the house manager of Theta, said the Theta officer.

Roberts did not return repeated phone calls.

Though not recognized by the University, the Theta chapter is recognized by the national Kappa Alpha Theta organization and by the National Pan-Hellenic Council, said Melissa A. Rohrbach '95, Theta's vice president for public relations.

Theta is independent of the final clubs andconducts an open rush process instead of a closedpunch, Rohrbach said.

Leaders of other final clubs contacted lastnight said they have not heard of the Lynx.

Deborah E. Lipson '95, president of the Bee,said that although she does not know anythingabout the club, she "support[s] any other women'sclub on campus."
