PBH Will Seek Service Funding

Phillips Brooks House (PBH) today will take the first step towards utilizing the public service funding provided under the new National Service Act.

PBH representatives will leave today for Washington D.C. to meet with officials of the National Service Corporation, which was established by the Act. At the meeting, PBH staff and students will discuss the filing of a grant application for the first money provided by the act.

"[This] is important in that it marks the first attempt to participate in the national service program," said PBH Executive Director Greg Johnson.

The National Service Act was proposed by President Clinton during the 1992 campaign and was passed by Congress last April. In an attempt to encourage idealism and education among the young, the act provides money for public service programs and the students involved with them.

PBH will officially file a grant application later this weekend for funds provided by the Summer Safety Program part of the act either later this weekend or early next week, according to PBH president John B. King Jr. '95.

"Summer Safety is designed to finance summer projects that deal with violence in the inner cities," King said. "And PBH is hopping to get money for our summer programs."

PBH already runs summer of programs. The organization is anything to get the money to full salaries and support the traini summer camp counselors, King

PBH's summer activities could be eligible forfunds under the act because the public servicegroup has given its programs an anti-violencetheme.

Counselors in the PBH summer camp program usepeace games and civic activities to teachalternatives to violence to inner-city youth.

PBH hopes to win grants from two other parts ofthe National Service Act.

King said the group will apply for moneythrough the Americorps, which he called the"centerpiece of Clinton's plan."

Students in Americorps will perform service inexchange for a minimum wage stipend and for moneythat must be used to pay for their education. Kingsaid.

PBH will apply to be one of the "charter sites"for the crops, so Harvard would have at least 20students in the program.

PBH also plans to apply for grants under theLearn said Serve-Higher Education aspect of theact.

Learn said Service is designed to fund programswhich combine learning with service.

In addition to applying for grants through PBH,King serves on the Massachusetts National andCommunity Service Commission. The commissionallocates federal grants to public serviceorganizations inside the state
