Programs to Move to Vanserg

By Alexander T. Nguyen

Both the Committee on Degrees in History and Literature and the Expository Writing program are tentatively scheduled for relocation to the Vanserg Building by mid-January.

The move is intended to help provide space for the planned Humanities Center in the combined Freshman Union and Burr Hall, according to History and Literature Director of Studies Janice Thaddeus.

"We will not commit to moving until we are sure that the funds [to build the Humanities Center] have been raised, but we are going on the working assumption that construction will indeed begin second term," Thaddeus said in a note sent to concentrators this week.

History and Literature's move is not yet definite, according to Thaddeus' letter, but would likely occur before the end of December.

Committee Chair Daniel G. Donoghue and Thaddeus could not be reached for further comment yesterday.

Many History and Literature concentrators expressed concern over the move.

"We have a great location now, and it's a shame that we have to walk all that distance to hand in the thesis or drop off stuff," concentrator George G. Shuffelton '96 said.

But other students said they felt the move would have little negative impact on their studies.

"I didn't even realize the History and Literature department was moving. It's inconvenient, but life's like that," said History and Literature concentrator Alison J. Huang '96, who also works at the Writing Center for the Expository Writing program.

"I don't mind the Hist and Lit [moving] because you don't travel there too often, but what's terrible is the Writing Center moving to Vanserg because students are never going to go there, and there's nothing we can do about it," she added.

The Expository Writing program will move to Vanserg on January 18, to return next September to 8 Prescott St., Sosland Director Nancy Sommers said.

"It's a difficult move because we have been here for about 18 years," she said. "It was ideal because all first-years take their Expos class and eat here [in the Union], and so this was a natural part of the freshman experience."

Sommers said Vanserg's location and the smaller space allotted will make individual conferences a little more difficult, but added that the move of the first-year dining hall to Memorial Hall and a new path to the building will facilitate the transition.

Expository Writing preceptor Rhonda J. Rockwell also said the new location will offer alternate conference sites at the Biolabs Cafe.

At a department meeting yesterday, the preceptors discussed issues of safety and lighting at Vanserg, Rockwell said.

Rockwell does not believe the change will significantly affect her classes. "It's just that the way we're geographically oriented will make the day longer. Otherwise, it's not a big deal," she said.
