Although the Yard Bulletin asserts that "the Union is not a Stop and Shop," as evidenced by the actions of three first-year students, the Freshman Union is apparently a furniture store.
The students, who did not want their identities to be revealed, removed a circular table from the Union's rotunda during lunch on December 7. They now face disciplinary probation for their actions.
According to one of the students who participated in the table heist, the first-years were driven more by a desire to play five-card stud that evening than to redecorate their dorm room.
"We needed something to play poker on that night," the first-year said. "We just carried the table right out the door."
The heist was short-lived, however, as a member of the administration witnessed the students taking the table into Mower Hall. After a room search that evening, the table was located and the students turned themselves in, said the first-year.
The student refused to discuss the disciplinary actions taken except to say that the reporter "should look up disciplinary probation."
The Handbook for Students states that disciplinary probation is "a strong warning to a student whose conduct gives serious cause for concern." It is a reprimand which becomes part of a student's official record. According to the first-year student, after the evening's poker game, they planned to return the table to the Union. "It was a spur of the moment kind of thing. It had a prank-like feel to it," the first-year said. "We made a mistake. We didn't think the matter [through] and acted impulsively.
