Policy Advisory Board Held Its First Meeting in Early June

The new University Benefits Committee (UBC), chaired by Provost Albert Carnesale, has been named and will start regular meetings in the fall.

"The committee met in early June," said Deborah Ruder, a University spokesperson. "They met each other and they talked about what materials they already had and what kind of materials they would need in the future."

The committee, which is made up of six faculty and seven administrative members including the provost, is charged with advising and informing the top members of the central administration as well as the Deans of changes in benefits policies for non-unionized personnel, including faculty.

The UBC's faculty members are drawn from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), the Kennedy School of Government, and the law, business and medical schools. The administrative side hails from the school of public health, the graduate school of education, the medical school, FAS and central administration.

"Deans were asked to nominate people to be on the committee, and although not every school is represented, the members are drawn from different parts of the University," Ruder said. "The committee will have subcommittees that will include people from other schools and involve a larger number of people."

Initially, there will be three subcommittees with at least eight members each, which will consider issues including faculty retirement benefits, health plans and administration of the benefits programs.

The UBC's faculty members are Reiner H. Kraakman, professor of law; Peter V. Marsden, professor of sociology; Scott P. Mason, Converse professor of finance and banking; Eleanor G. Shore, medical school dean for faculty affairs; Kay Kaufman Shelemay, professor of music and David A. Wise, Stambaugh professor of political economy in the Kennedy school of government.

The administrative members of the UBC are Richard J. Cannon, dean for administration in the School of Public Health; Karen L. Davis, director of administrative management at the medical school; Joel C. Monell, administrative dean at the school of education; Rita B. Moore, managing auditor; Polly Price and Elizabeth W. Swain, assistant director of the Core.

The members have been appointed to staggered terms of up to three years.
