A baby's first steps aren't too big.
And for the newly-born Harvard women's golf team, seemingly small victories are triumphs.
One of those small-putts-for-the-players, giant-drives-for-Harvard-golf days came in late April, when the Crimson took first place at the Massachusetts State Championships. It was Harvard's first-ever victory in a tournament, and it established the team as the best in the state.
Not too bad for a three-year-old program.
Junior co-captain Alexis Boyle, a member of the program's first recruiting class, led the whole field with a score of 85, and classmate Megan Murray came in fifth with a 89 on the rain-swept course at Amherst Orchards. Harvard finished with a total of 363.
It was by far the team's best performance of the season. In Harvard's seven other tournaments throughout the fall and spring seasons, the Crimson never came in higher than fifth among fields ranging from nine to 15 teams.
Still, the future looks bright. Harvard did have a small team this year, with only seven on the roster, but senior Madge Roberts is the only one graduating.
And there's potential among the underclassmen--sophomore Suzanne Ranere notched a 83-84--167 at the Dartmouth Invitational--and freshman Jocelyn Bozivich earned Harvard's second-best score at the Hartford Invitational (89-88--177).
