My attention was caught by the article concerning what to do about regulating cums, magna cums and summa cum laude honors (Worries About Summa Integrity Drive Downsizing Reform," Scrutiny, June 5, 1997). It seems there is an inordinate profusion of them at Harvard. Evidently, it is becoming somewhat of an embarrassment to the University. May I offer a suggestion which might help to resolve this issue.

Why not regulate cums and magna cums to undergraduates, leaving summa cums to graduate students only. That way you might increase your graduate enrollments and keep the brightest in the fold. What do you think? --Rhoda M. Crowell '42   Tilton, N.H.
