A week in the life of crime is never enough to establish the existence of increased danger in any urban area. The staff thus overstates its concern for long-term student safety based on a questionable pattern of three unrelated crimes. Instead, the focus should rest on the recent robbery in the Winthrop JCR. Rarely are students forced to confront assailants in the comfort of their own houses or dorms.
In the future, this type of invasive (and thus more serious) crime could be prevented by increased student concern about who enters their houses without identification. Even universal key-card access wouldn't solve this problem because individuals are often granted entry based on unfounded trust and nothing more. The onus of protection therefore falls equally on police and students.
