Window Frame Catches Fire in Lowell House

By Renee J. Raphael, CONTRIBUTING WRITER

A basement window frame caught fire yesterday afternoon in the main control room of Lowell House.

Officials prevented students from entering Lowell's R and S entryways for a short period of time due to smoke generated by the fire.

The fire itself caused little damage, according to James W. Coveney, Lowell House superintendent.

"The window frame is destroyed," Coveney said. "Aside from that, there doesn't seem to be any damage."

A phone call alerted Coveney to the fire. After entering the basement, he grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher, emptied it onto the flames and pulled the alarm.

"I went in and saw smoke behind the building and grabbed a fire extinguisher," Coveney said.

Officials do not yet know the cause of the fire.

"I'm sure we will investigate to find out what caused it," Coveney said.
