The newly-elected chair of the campus' first Cuban-American organization said yesterday the group's main objectives will be to foster Cuban-American culture on campus and to promote a free and democratic Cuba.

Carlos A. Zumpano '96 was elected chair of the Cuban-American Undergraduate Students Association (CAUSA) with a slate of other officers Thursday night. The group formed two weeks ago and has met twice.

CAUSA will sponsor guest speakers and panel discussions at Harvard and other universities on Cuban and Cuban-American issues, Zumpano said.

The organization has not yet settled on final plans for the coming months, however, because it is waiting to find out its funding situation, Zumpano said.

CAUSA has experienced a very enthusiastic start, he said. Approximately 20 people attended the organization's two meetings, he said.

"In our first meeting everyone participated," Zumpano said. "Everybody's very excited about it."

Though the majority of CAUSA's members are of Cuban-American heritage, Zumpano said that the organization is not restricted to students of this ethnic group.

The new group's first function was attending the Harvard Foundation's CulturalRhythms festival, where CAUSA members met withFoundation guest Andy Garcia, who isCuban-American.
