Track Succeeds at Harvard Meet

Harvard athletes won nine of 24 events in the Harvard Indoor Track and Field Invitational held at the Gordon Track Center at Saturday afternoon.

The meet featured athletes from a variety of local colleges and track clubs and no team scores were kept.

Junior high jumper Kart Siilats, the defending NCAA indoor champion, took the first step towards defending her title by leaping 1.81 meters to make an NCAA provisional qualifying height for the first time this season.

There was no weight throw competition at Saturday’s meet, which meant that women’s co-captain Nicky Grant didn’t have a chance to top her record-breaking 18.90-meter throw from last week, but she did win the shot put with a season-best throw of 12.92 meters.

The other two event winners for the Crimson were freshman Eleanor Thompson, who took the 60-meter hurdles for the second weekend in a row in a season-best time of 9.10 seconds, and Liz Cutright-Smith who won the triple jump with a 10.69-meter leap.

On the men’s side, senior Nnamdi Okike continued to shine in his return to the team this year with a 1:54.73 run in the 800.

Co-captain Kobie Fuller won a 200-meter race for the second week in a row with a season-best time of 22.12, and senior Aaron Snead won the pole vault with a jump of 4.41 meters.

Junior Sean Meeker won the 60-meter dash in 7.09 seconds, which is already at the level he ran at Heps last year.

Senior David Grimm, who won the shot put with a personal-best 15.79-meter throw last week, came up with another winning effort on Saturday with a 15.39-meter throw.

The next Harvard dual meet will be on Jan. 5 at noon against Northeastern. The Crimson does not see any Ivy competition until the Brown-Cornell tri-meet on Jan. 29.
