Re “Theatre Director Dies of Heart Attack,” news web update, June 25:
I was never a student at Harvard, but I was a lighting professional who worked closely with Alan P. Symonds ’69 and his students providing them advice, equipment, and support throughout a period of five years while working at a lighting rental company. I have never in my 20 years in the business met a man who so was revered and cherished by so many theater people, professionals, and students alike.
Alan was a man who could tell stories about the profession that could make even the most seasoned pro realize how much more he had to learn. While I had not seen Alan in quite some time, the news of his passing had the same impact as losing a family member. It is said that the theater industry is small and that we are one large family; well, this family is mourning over the loss of a true educator and professional.
