Renovated Pfoho Grille Reopens

After six months of shuttered windows, the Pfoho Grille will begin serving its signature chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, and sundaes again today.

Some Pfohosers have grown restless over the renovation of the grille, which began in June but took almost two months longer than expected.

“People started getting frustrated,” Stephen W. Piatelli ’10 said, adding that some Pforzheimer House residents have been resorting to Brain Break. “It’ll make a huge impact on how people get their late-night snacks,” he said.

Yesterday, workers milled in and out of Holmes Hall, which houses the grille, scrubbing floors and carting equipment outside.

The grille was slated to open in October, according to Pforzheimer Building Manager Mario E. Leon, but delays in the arrival of custom-made items kept the doors closed longer than intended.

Over the past six months, the grille was equipped with new countertops and frying equipment and received other minor improvements, according to Mary E. Collins ’08, the student manager of the grille.

Collins said the renovations would make the grille the best on campus, stressing the grille’s fast and friendly service.

While the grille was closed, many Quad residents turned to the often more expensive route of ordering food from nearby restaurants for their late-night food fix.

Collins said the grille’s convenient location by the main entrance to Pfoho would draw students.

“I guess [take-out orders are] a potential source of competition, but the benefits of the grille are that it’s really close by,” Collins said.

Other students were less enthusiastic about the reopening. Shayan Rajani ’09 used to visit the grille frequently, but he said that high prices left him going elsewhere for midnight meals. He said the grille seemed to be in fine condition last year.

“It never occurred to me that it needed renovations,” Rajani said.

The grille will be open 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. from Sunday to Wednesday, 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Thursdays, and 11:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
