Akpan Named to Final U-20 World Cup Roster

By The Crimson Staff

Countless hours of highly scrutinized training camps, practices and games have finally paid off for rising sophomore Andre' Akpan, who was recently named to the final roster of the United States' U-20 World Cup Team. The selection process took over two years and pitted Akpan against the best young soccer players the nation has to offer, both on the professional and collegiate levels.

The 21-player team is made up of 14 athletes from professional clubs and only seven from collegiate-level soccer. Akpan, who has made four appearances with the U.S. team so far, is also the leading scorer with four goals.

The tournament will kick off in Canada at the end of this month, with matches held in six sites around the country. The U.S. will play in Group D with Korea, Poland and Brazil, and begins play against Korea in Montreal on June 30. Matches will be broadcast on ESPNU, ESPN360.com and usoccer.com.
