LIVE BLOG: HARVARD AT DARTMOUTH (11/1)

By Crimson staff, Crimson Staff Writer

FINAL—HARVARD 35, DARTMOUTH 7

0:00: Harvard kneels and that's the game. Thanks to all of you that stuck with me instead of tuning into NESN. Why this game was featured on NESN is beyond me, but we here at The Harvard Crimson will be bringing you live coverage of all Harvard's football games.

0:36: Kick received by Adam Chrissis. Flag for facemask.

0:44: Deevy is redeemed, catching his first career touchdown pass in front of lousy coverage by Drew St. Lawrence (also Kempe's first career touchdown pass). Foley Schmidt's extra point is good. 12 plays for 70 yards, 2:44 time of possession. HARVARD 35, DARTMOUTH 7

0:49: Will Deevy just whiffed on an easy pass in the end zone.

1:15: Brown just scored again to take a 34-20 lead over Penn. And like that, Harvard's chances of a repeat Ivy title are just about gone.

1:40: Attendance just announced as 4,111. Clearly the license plate frame ploy didn't work out.

1:46: Pass from Kempe to Jimmy Mullen is overthrown in the end zone.

2:05: Pass complete to Kevin Gallagher for a Dartmouth first down.

2:41: Harvard's playing the all-scrubs team. Drew St. Lawrence (again, who?!?) just made the tackle on that play.

3:28: Harvard sophomore defensive back Sumorwuo Zaza (Madeleine Shapiro: "Who?!?") with the run, fails on the 4th down play, turnover on downs.

5:37: Simpson still in at quarterback.

6:02: Deep bomb pass is overthrown, bringing up 4th and 10 from the 2. Kicking team is packed in in the end zone. Alex Breaux receives the punt.

6:38: Dartmouth can't get any gains, stuck at its own 2.

7:26: 4th down attempt fails at the 2 yard line, turnover on downs.

8:10: Simpson keeps it on the 3rd and goal play and dragged down for a one-yard gain. Going for it on 4th from the 5.

13:01: Third string QB Matt Simpson in for this drive. Hands off to Randy "The Juice" Ojukwu on the first play.

13:31: I just got the stat sheet from the 3rd quarter and Dartmouth had -15 yards of total offense in the last quarter.

13:36: Hand off to Mitchelson is dropped and recovered by McCracken at the Dartmouth 31 yard line.

14:16: Pair of hand offs from O'Hagan to Jenkins results in an eventual touchdown. Long's extra point is good. 7 plays for 55 yards, 4:01 time of possession. HARVARD 35, DARTMOUTH 0

FOURTH QUARTER

0:00: As the third quarter comes to a close, I can't help but feel a little sorry for Dartmouth.

0:15: A little mix up in the backfield on the hand off between O'Hagan and Doerner knocks O'Hagan to the ground. "That's the best hit all day," says one guy in the press box.

3:08: Kick off returned by Berry to the Harvard 45.

3:17: Dartmouth's 3rd and 7 play results in intentional grounding on Kempe (forced by Desmond Bryant) and a safety. HARVARD 28, DARTMOUTH 0

4:34: Harvard's going for it on 4th and 2 from the 3-yard line. O'Hagan runs the option, but doesn't use the option to Jenkins and gets taken down easily, turnover on downs.

6:59: Harvard snaps the ball just in the nick of time before the play clock expired, and O'Hagan had everybody fooled, taking it to the left for 10 yards.

7:47: O'Hagan takes it himself for 7 yards.

8:21: Another hand off to Jenkins for 9 yards and another first down.

9:26: Hand off to Jenkins, takes it up the middle taking it into Dartmouth territory.

10:00: O'Hagan back in at QB.

10:29: Dartmouth set up to punt, Berry to return. Matt Hanson ends up receiving it.

11:36: Alex Jenny is back in the game and just got destroyed by Eric Schultz for a loss of 11 yards.

12:23: Pizzotti to Jason Miller, who with great blocking by Matt Luft gets a touchdown. Long's extra point is blocked and recovered by Casey Frost, but eventually dragged down by Andrew Berry. 1 play for 20 yards, 0:07 time of possession. HARVARD 26, DARTMOUTH 0

12:44: Punt hits off Abuhoff and is recovered by Matt Thomas at the Dartmouth 20. Pizzotti comes back in at QB.

12:56: Horrible pass to Lorditch almost gets intercepted, but is bobbled by the Dartmouth guy, then bobbled about 20 times by Lorditch before he dropped it.

13:51: In an impressive showing of athleticism, Liam dodges tackles to put together a 28-yard run.

15:00: Dartmouth's kicker Foley Schmidt boots it out of the end zone. Liam O'Hagan comes out as the quarterback in the second half.

THIRD QUARTER

T-6: Penn just took the lead over Brown again, 17-14. Also, Columbia's keeping it close against Yale. Yikes.

T-7: I've got to hand it to the Harvard Band. They had a good bit comparing Dartmouth students to NASA astronauts in space. In both place, those must deal with a dark vacuous space that has no signs of intelligent life and nothing to do on weekends.

END OF FIRST HALF—This game has all the makings of a blowout.

0:00: After a failed attempt at the end zone, Long kicks a 30-yard field goal. HARVARD 20, DARTMOUTH 0

0:16: Pizzotti takes it himself to the 27, but helmet-to-helmet tackle gives Harvard an additional 15.

0:30: Draw play is working great, Gino takes it to the Dartmouth 39.

1:29: The guy in front of me in the press box just told me about Conner Kempe's near fatal kit-board accident off the coast of Jupiter, Fla. Wow.

1:40: Matt Curtis drills Dartmouth QB Alex Jenny on the play. Jenny's helped off the field and freshman Conner Kempe comes in to replace him.

1:59: Pizzotti can't find an open receiver, takes it himself for three yards and a touchdown. Long's extra point is good. 10 plays for 87 yards, 4:04 time of possession. HARVARD 17, DARTMOUTH 0

3:09: Great blocking allows Gino Gordon to run the ball down to the Dartmouth 20, a 31-yard gain.

3:24: Bomb pass to Levi Richards incomplete but Dartmouth defender didn't let him catch it, flag thrown.

3:43: Pizzotti takes it himself for the first down.

4:20: Gordon takes the option from Pizzotti on the left side. Brings up 3rd and inches.

5:37: After an ineligible receiver call puts Harvard at 1st and 15 from its own 8. Pizzotti hits Gino Gordon for some yards—it's good to see he's playing.

6:41: Deep pass intended for Carroll Papajohn, winner of this week's Harvard Crimson Most Appetizing Name Award, but Papajohn gets demolished. Fellow staff writer Madeleine Shapiro: "He has a last name for a first name. I can't handle that." I can't handle the fact that his last name makes me hungry.

7:38: Good news, and bad news. Sonny McCracken just had a late tackle on Alex Jenny. Good news, McCracken's back. Bad news, he got flagged for 15 yards.

7:48: I'm tempted to go over to the Women's Soccer game because the gimmick over there is a Dartmouth winter hat and judging by how cold I am right now, I'm thinking about it. Oh and Penn just scored a touchdown so they're beating Brown 10-3. Woohoo!

8:23: Jenkins runs around the right and gets stopped on the 3rd and 2 play. Hull out to punt.

9:51: Ho gets up with a little help and looks like he's walking off the field on his own strength.

10:10: Pizzotti taking a ton of time in the pocket, finally passes to Cheng, who gets absolutely drilled. He's getting looked at by the trainers.

11:04: Cheng Ho has monster carry on the opening drive, gaining 15 yards.

11:13: Dartmouth's offense has nothing doing, forced to punt. Berry fair catches at the 21.

12:06: Shawn Abuhoff returns the kick to Dartmouth's 30. Michael Doerner, down on the play, is helped off the field.

12:13: Long's kick from 34 yards out is good. 10 plays for 49 yard, 3:51 time of possession. HARVARD 10, DARTMOUTH 0

12:39: Short pass to Levi Richards, who should have cut back for more yards but is stopped for only a one yard gain.

13:19: False start on Lorditch moves the ball back to the 18 and an overthrown pass to Luft brings up 3rd and 8.

14:13: A couple of runs by Ben Jenkins takes the ball to Dartmouth's 20.

SECOND QUARTER

0:00: Fast quarter comes to a close.

0:10: Pizzotti should have just gotten sacked on that play but somehow escapes and gets a first down.

1:04: A Dartmouth guy loses a contact and in a feat never before seen by a sports official, the referee finds the contact! The guy in front of me in the press box: "I wish that guy was my home plate umpire." Well said, sir, well said.

1:13: Dartmouth going for it on 4th and 4, incomplete pass to Galligan, turnover on downs.

2:05: Dartmouth has 3rd and 3 from the Harvard 33 yard line. Mitchelson met immediately by Sean Hayes in the backfield.

3:29: A string of passes to Tim McManus has Dartmouth marching up the field.

5:13: Thomas Hull with a beautiful punt. Dartmouth starts the drive at its own 34.

5:41: Pizzotti just got sacked for a loss of 9.

6:29: Pizzotti lofts up a pass to Matt Luft, who should have caught that for a monster touchdown, but just barely comes up short.

6:56: After a hand off to Jenkins for three yards, a screen pass to Jenkins up the middle gets Harvard a first down on its own 33.

7:36: Doerner pushes through the Dartmouth line on the punt and pushes the Dartmouth guy into the punter, who got up looking for a flag. No dice.

8:49: Dartmouth at their own 40 with a 3rd and 7 play. Pass to Will Deevy, met immediately by Matt Thomas. Andrew Berry back to receive the punt.

10:14: With that three yard run, Dartmouth finally got its first yard of total offense.

10:40: Fake hand off to Jenkins, Chris Pizzotti runs the ball 11 yards, bowling over defenders on his way, and a touchdown. Long's extra point is good. 7 plays for 42 yards, 2:42 time of possession. HARVARD 7, DARTMOUTH 0

11:01: Pass to Chris Lorditch, who gets his bell rung but holds on to the ball for the first down.

12:10: Short run by Jenkins can't get the first. Cheng Ho and Michael Doerner come out on the 4th and 1 play. Cheng Ho runs around to the left for the first down.

13:08: Deep pass incomplete to Matt Luft on the opening drive. Then hand off to Ben Jenkins for 8 yards.

13:26: Punt received by Matt Hanson, got drilled with no halo, flag on the play. Net gain of 16 yards on the punt return.

13:36: Pass intended Philip Galligan, hit hard by Collin Zych.

13:50: Screen pass to Mitchelson, met by Matt Curtis for no gain.

14:32: Handoff to Robert Mitchelson taken down by Conor Murphy for two-yard loss.

15:00: Patrick Long with the opening kick, deep into the end zone, returned by Peter Pidermann (are you kidding me??) to the 28.

FIRST HALF

T-2: Harvard wins the coin toss and defers to the second half.

T-9: The performance of the National Anthem by the Dartmouth Band was a stirring rendition with all the finest instruments...namely a guy wailing on a huge Poland Springs water cooler with a mallet.

T-12: Shout out to News Editor Max Child from the Dartmouth Band for his article about Hermione Granger.

T-19: Answer to the analogy: Harvard Stadium:Memorial Field::The Harvard Crimson:The Voice

T-26: So in light of today's SAT for prospective Harvard students, here's an SAT style analogy. As we walked into Memorial Field, attendants were passing out Dartmouth license plate frames, a cheap gimmick to attract fans. So here's the analogy: Harvard Stadium:Memorial Field::The Harvard Crimson: ??
