Our recruitment for a more diverse staff greatly benefits from our ability to say that all students with a significant level of financial need have been awarded Crimson financial aid to pay for their work on the paper. Of the 85 students on our financial aid program this semester, about half served as masthead executives this past year and the other half will serve as executives in the coming year. The financial aid program certainly contributes to racial as well as socioeconomic diversity on the Crimson: 53 current financial aid students come from minority ethnic backgrounds.

Because of Harvard's new financial aid programs, the neediest students who apply to us are no longer eligible for federal work study—and The Crimson no longer benefits from the 66% wage discount the federal program previously provided. Our endowment dividends only cover half of the financial aid costs. We pay significantly more out of our budget for every student. But we are committed to continuing this program to allow high-need students to fill their steep mandatory tuition contribution without sacrificing their success at the paper.

Please help us continue to fulfill our mission, and enable us to recruit a strong, diverse staff, by making a tax-deductible, charitable contribution to The Harvard Crimson Financial Aid Fund. Donations will be restricted to the financial aid endowment unless you designate otherwise. Please contact Maxwell Child if you have any questions about matching gifts from employers or if you are interested in donating stock.
