So why did I choose to go hear Piper Kerman, author of the book “Orange is the New Black,” speak on the busy Monday night of March 30? To be completely honest, I just wanted to get my newly purchased copy of the book signed. Luckily, I got much more out of it than just a signed book.

W.E.B. Du Bois Ceremony - Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey accepts the W.E.B. Du Bois Medal for the late Maya Angelou. Later Winfrey, along with honorees David Adjaye, Harry Belafonte, Steve McQueen, Shonda Rhimes and Harvey Weinstein, received W.E.B. Du Bois medals Tuesday afternoon in Sanders Theatre.

Harry Belafonte, distinguished artist and activist, was honored at the W.E.B. Du Bois medal ceremony on Tuesday afternoon. Honorees also included Oprah Winfrey, David Adjaye, Steve McQueen, Shonda Rhimes, and Harvey Weinstein.
