Flyby's House Rankings: A Comparative History

Although we've spent the last week evaluating and ranking Harvard's 12 Houses, we wanted to take a moment to remind freshmen (and upperclassmen alike) that House life quality isn't dictated by any outside ranking, but rather by what you make of your House's advantages and how you work to improve your House's disadvantages.

Housing Day 2011

Upperclassmen stormed freshmen dorms early yesterday morning to deliver housing letters to members of the Class of 2014. Afterwards, covered in their house colors and mascots, the same upperclassmen filled Annenberg to congratulate new House members on their placements. Photos by Meredith H. Keffer, Heather C. River Run

Freshmen decorate blocking group t-shirts at last night's "Fresh Fest." Students had the opportunity to make balloon animals and get henna tattoos during the evening.

Freshmen Participate in River Run

Keeping with tradition, the Class of 2014 spent their Housing Day Eve hanging out in Annenberg Hall, visiting upperclassman Houses with their blocking groups, and praying to the River Gods.

A freshmen blocking group huddles together in the Kirkland courtyard as current residents of the House cheer them on. Freshmen braved the cold to carry on the Housing-Day Eve tradition of River Run.

Freshmen Compete for Spelling Bee Glory

In a heated head-on-head battle among the brightest brains of the freshman class, one speller emerged victorious.

A ‘FAAB’-ulous Affair

If the Freshman Arts Advisory Board (FAAB) has one mission, it is to provide intense Harvard students with not-so-intense artistic downtime. Recognizing that students, and especially freshmen, can be intimidated by the heavy time commitments required by extracurricular organizations and semester-long VES courses, FAAB has organized a wide array of spring workshops to help first-year students engage with the arts.

Freshman Speed-Dating

Approximately 100 freshmen slogged through the Cambridge slush last Thursday evening to potentially find their soulmate—or at least enjoy free massages and burritos. Inside Ticknor Lounge, students slid into twelve rows of chairs and adopted identifying numbers, ready to commit to the College’s first-ever freshmen speed-dating event, "Sex, Love, & Harvard." The event was hosted by the Center for Wellness and the Freshman Dean's Office.
