Harvard Helpers

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'" You've heard this quote from Mr. Rogers so many times over the past week—over television, the radio, and on Facebook and Instagram and Twitter. Surely it would've gotten stale by now if only it weren't so true, and here at Harvard, we've gotten to see firsthand the power of "helpers" throughout the crazy mess that was last week. Flyby thinks they deserve some recognition—so here, in no particular order, is a list of some of our favorite "Harvard Helpers."

Be a Great Prefrosh Host

I was never a prefrosh at Visitas, I never officially hosted a prefrosh, and I don't even know what the word Visitas means (is it Latin or a pun?). I did however, own a dog, and I'm pretty sure that means I’m qualified to give advice on how to host prefrosh.

Hundreds of members of the Class of 2016 crowded into Annenberg Hall Monday night for the kickoff of advising fortnight. The two-week long program consists of a series of panels, open houses, teas, and socials for each of the College’s 48 concentrations with the goal of helping freshmen to choose their concentrations by the end of their sophomore fall.

Love Advice for All!

Welcome to "Listen Up!," Flyby's weekly advice column, written by two jobless, washed-up seniors from their futon in Winthrop. We recently received a question submission that went as follows: "Oppam Gangnam Style!" Just to clarify, this is not actually a question. As in, if you submitted that as your weekly discussion question for section, you would fail (a.k.a. get a B-).

The Prefrosh You Meet at Visitas

Remember Visitas? That magical weekend when you acquainted yourself with your potential new home and met your fellow brilliant overachievers was not so long ago. As future members of the Class of 2017 prepare to come to campus sooner than you can say "advising fortnight," take a few minutes to walk down memory lane with us. By the way, for all you prefrosh out there: Hey there, future members of the Class of 2017! Welcome to Flyby. We've put together a little classification of the types of the characters you are likely to meet. See if you can spot these various species throughout the weekend.

What Your Freshman Dorm Posters Say About You

Breakfast at Tiffany’s Nothing brings sophistication to a dorm room like an eight-dollar poster of Audrey Hepburn. As she coolly surveys your scattered party dresses and unmade bed, Audrey is confident in you. Your secret that your “pearl” earrings are from Forever21 will be safe with her. If Holly Golightly can go from country bumpkin to a Manhattan socialite, surely you can nail down that coffee-fetching publishing internship in New York this summer. Or at least learn to do your laundry a classier number of times per month.

After Student Alerts OSL of River Run Email, Rumors Spark Privacy Fears

After members of at least two student organizations canceled their River Run festivities Wednesday night, undergraduates swapped rumors over email lists, voicing concern that administrators in the Office of Student Life had learned of the groups’ evening plans by monitoring student listservs—a claim contested by the University. An OSL administrator later said the OSL was alerted to a student email through an anonymous student tip.

A Taste of HUDS

“I grew up on a farm; my father was a farmer. I could walk out into the field and pick peas and eat them off the vine.” Crista Martin, director of communications for Harvard University Dining Services, sits on a swivel office chair surrounded by piles of papers.
