Harvard Yard

Fall Foliage Step 1

Step 1: Pick your tree. Think of it like picking your life partner, but only more permanent because like your mother always told you, once you post it to the Internet, it's out there for the world to see forever. So make it a good one. It can't be too fat, or too skinny, and not so tall that it doesn't fit in your frame. Oh, and unlike picking your partner, you don't want to see it naked.

Fall Foliage Step 4

Step 4: After you have completed these crucial steps, check your pic. Is everything on fleek? Now, you are ready to share your magical fall moment with friends and family. Get out there and “wow” them! And don’t ever forget the #nofilter.

Fall Foliage Step 3

Step 3: Lighting is everything. Before sprawling out across your bed for your daily afternoon nap, set your alarm for approximately 3 p.m. When the alarm goes off, don’t hit snooze. Head outside and wait for the moment when the sun peeps out from the clouds just enough to reflect off of the color of the leaves. Snap away!

Fall Foliage Step 2

Step 2: Focus on the angle. You can’t tell your tree to strike a pose, to work the camera or, as supermodel Tyra Banks would say, to smize. You have to do all of the work yourself. Don’t be embarrassed if you have to squat below the tree to get that upward-facing angle you desire. The contrast between the leaves and the sky is worth it. It’s what your followers want to see.

Outdoor Study Break

Goksenin Akdeniz ‘18 and Bruno Moguel Gallegos ‘18 spend time in the yard on Wednesday afternoon. They were two of many students trying to enjoy the warmth before the arrival of colder weather.

Harvard’s Reign of Terror

Life is full of change. Semesters end in the blink of an eye, friends come and go, and my future career options change with every week. Change is good, I’m told, and I’ve come to accept this.

Jukebox

We’ve all done it: Sitting in one of the candy-colored chairs in the Yard or barely making it to class (even on Harvard time), we pop on a pair of headphones. We crank up that one song—the soundtrack to our Ivy League angst, the one we secretly sing to in our underwear when no one’s around, the one to which we can’t help walking at least a little in time. With classes just getting into full swing, FM yanked headphones out of unsuspecting ears in all corners of the Yard.

Cribs: Freshmen Edition

Move-in’s done. Freshmen are finally settled. And we all have one question: Who made the best of the worst housing on campus? In search of the answer, we scoured the Yard and spoke to the people who live there. Here’s what we found.

Studying Atop Widener Steps

Taiga Abe '17 and Marlon Seijo '18, both neurobiology concentrators, study outside on top of Widener Library's steps, overlooking the yard. Though still shopping week, Seijo was already hard at work on Chemistry 17: “Principles of Organic Chemistry.”

Freshman Convocation Reception

Members of the class of 2019 streamed from the steps of Widener Library where they took their class picture Tuesday afternoon to attend the Freshman Convocation reception in the Yard.
