House Life

Freshmen build camaraderie through River Run rituals, such as those that this group was performing in Quincy House courtyard last night.

Lowell House Masters Diana Eck and Dorothy Austin welcomed freshmen into their dining hall last night, where preparations were being made for the Housing Day festivities.

The Lowell House courtyards were the sites of various rituals last night as freshman carried out River Run. Gone, however, are the days when upperclassmen would attend, distributing alcoholic beverages.

Freshmen Rethink River Run Rituals

Despite threats of disciplinary action against freshmen seeking to appease the River Gods, some members of the Class of 2013 nevertheless decided to celebrate Housing Day Eve with gusto.

Dean of Freshmen Thomas A. Dingman ’67 speaks with Harvard University Police Department officers during River Run yesterday, when some freshmen celebrated the night despite threats of disciplinary action.

Freshman blocking groups create their own t-shirts at the Slumber Party in Annenberg Hall last night in anticipation of Housing Day. The social gathering was organized by the First Year Social Committee.

Adams House

One of the best parts about living in Adams House is knowing that throngs of Quadlings, River rats, and even claustrophobic Quincy residents would trade a whole GPA point to live in your gold-brushed abode.

Eliot House

Majestically situated on the banks of the Charles, Eliot House has a lot to offer the lucky freshmen placed here. With a vibrant community, a gorgeous courtyard, loving House Masters, and a wealth of facilities, this House is truly an all-inclusive package. Freshmen assigned to Eliot will have no reason to envy any of their (less fortunate) peers.

College Dean Releases Ad Board Report

Dean of Harvard College Evelynn M. Hammonds released yesterday the official report of the Committee to Review the Administrative Board, which recommends a holistic reform of the College’s primary disciplinary body.

Kirkland House

As part of our Housing Market series, we've been posting reviews and rankings for each of Harvard's 12 residential Houses. Click here to read more about our project. So, you want to be a member of the most elite House on campus? If you thought getting into Harvard was hard, clearly you've never tried to become a member of Kirkland House. Although not entirely abandoning DeWolfe housing, Kirkland will only keep one of its two current floors. This means that it will now accept significantly fewer freshmen into its storied halls.

Houses Keep Churning Out Videos

With only a few days remaining, Harvard's Houses have been releasing YouTube videos at a steady clip. The videos are filled with memes and pop songs. Some are pretty bad; others make us want to transfer from our lame Houses and into ones that know how to make a quality video.

Pforzheimer House

As part of our Housing Market series, we'll be posting reviews and rankings for each of Harvard's 12 residential Houses over the next few days. Click here to read more about our project. “Pfuck my life” is what you might mistakenly think upon discovering a Pfolar bear at your door on Thursday morning. Sure, there are closer places to live than Pfoho, but the rabid enthusiasm of Pfohosers, tutors, and House Masters alike is a testament to the fact that Pfoho is among the better Houses. Pfoho is a tightly-knit, pfamily-style community of pfriendly people who like to hang out and have a good time. Incredible rooming and a social layout make Pfoho an awesome place to meet new people while not getting too n-1 close for comfort. Home, sweet Pfohome.

In the Houses: Late Night Snacks

Crimson staff photographer Aleah C. Bowie explores the House Grilles, which provide tasty (albeit unhealthy) late-night sustenance to students hard at work (or, on weekends, hard at play).

Quincy Grille

The Quincy Grille offers late night favorites—hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken wings, milkshakes, mozzerella sticks, and their famous “orgasmic waffles.”

Eliot's Inferno

The Inferno, Eliot House’s Grille, is so called because of a grease fire that caused the entire house to evacuate in 2000. The grille was resurrected in 2008 and has been running successfully since then.

Grille Workers

All of the House Grilles–including Pfoho’s, not pictured–are student run. Kathryn Albert ‘10, one of many students employed by the grilles, prepares hamburgers for hungry Dunsterites.
