July 1 - August 8: 'I'm Having a Bad Day'

The past five weeks at Harvard have seen 78 thefts, flooded dorms, and smoking mulch. Through it all, HUPD has been around to keep campus safe. As part of our Securitas series, we've combed through recent HUPD log entries and published some of the more colorful entries below.


Security Guard Charged In Larceny

A campus security guard allegedly stole a laptop and an electronic tablet from a pair of undergraduates last fall.

HUPD Officer Sues Harvard Police

A Harvard University Police Department officer has filed a complaint against the University for discrimination.


Police converged on Canaday Hall after a foot chase through Harvard Yard which resulted in the apprehension of two men suspected of stealing two cellphones from the T-Mobile store in Harvard Square around noon yesterday.


Suspects Caught After Harvard Yard Chase

A foot chase by police ended with the apprehension of two suspects in Harvard Yard around noon today.


Currier House Evacuated After Fire Alarm Sounds

About 30 students evacuated Currier House after a fire alarm went off around 1:40 p.m. today. Three Cambridge Fire Department units and one Harvard University Police Department unit responded within minutes.

Unidentified Powder Found in Science Center, Testing of Substance May Take Weeks

A powdery substance was discovered in the Science Center at approximately 3:27 p.m. on Sunday, according to the Harvard University Police Department log.


Designated Pathways: Tested On Foot

In light of the recent crimes that have taken place, three Flyby correspondents went on a late-night stroll to see just how safe HUPD’s designated pathways really are. A ranking system was developed based on how safe and secure the correspondents felt in each of the key sites on the map. The sites are listed below, beginning with the most safe and ending with the least safe.


College To Take Steps To Increase Security

The College is taking additional steps in conjunction with the Harvard University Police Department to deter crime.


Safety Pathways And More Crime

In light of the 10 robberies and attempted robberies that have taken place in the past few weeks, HUPD has released a map of designated safety pathways around campus for those who may be traveling alone or at night.


Harvard Continues Extra Yard Officers

Additional police officers hired in response to a robbery outside Thayer Hall last Thursday will continue to patrol the Yard this weekend, according to a Harvard University Police Department spokesman.


Armed Robber Strikes in Yard

A man unaffiliated with Harvard was robbed at gunpoint in the Yard yesterday at 2:45 a.m., according to a community advisory e-mailed to the Harvard affiliates yesterday morning by the Harvard University Police Department.


Flag Stolen From Phoenix, S.K. Club

A member of the Phoenix S.K. Club—one of Harvard’s eight male final clubs—reported the club’s flag stolen last week, an act which the member who reported the crime speculated may be related to the clubs’ recruitment season, or its recent wave of publicity from being featured in “The Social Network.”


Robbers Strike Outside Dudley

A man was the victim of an attempted armed robbery on Massachusetts Avenue near Sacramento Street right outside of the Dudley Co-op on Saturday at 12:45 a.m., according to the Cambridge Police Department.


Following Change in Definition, Burglary Rate Plunges

On paper, the number of burglaries at Harvard’s Cambridge campus plummeted 91 percent last year, but the decline had more to do with policy in Washington than safety in Cambridge.


May 10-16: Suspicious Activity

Contrary to popular belief, "Securitas" is not a portmanteau of "security" and "veritas," but rather the name of the multinational corporation subcontracted by Harvard for campus security. Despite this fact, we here at FlyBy find the word "Securitas" to be so hilarious that we've decided to name a new series after it. Every week, we'll offer up amusing (and sometimes absurd) HUPD daily log entries. Take a look!


Crime Club Visits HUPD Headquarters

When Colleen M. Berryessa ’11 approached the headquarters of the Harvard University Police Department, she was struck by its resemblance to the other office buildings on Mass. Ave.
