LONG horns by bounteous Nature
Unto the bull were given,
Their strong hoofs unto horses.
The timid hare, affrighted,
Finds safety in his swiftness;
The same hand gave the lion
His all-sufficient weapons.
The fish to swim have power;
She gave birds wings to fly with,
And men their understanding;
And had she naught for women?
For sword and shield and buckler
Nature gave women Beauty;
For Beauty conquers all things.
The gleaming steel is vanquished;
And Vulcan, all submission,
Was conquered by a woman.
