FIELD MEETING OF THE H. A. A.

By G. H. D.

THE fifth Field Meeting of the H. A. A. was held at Beacon Park, Friday, May 24, and proved the most successful that the Association has ever held. Only one event was struck off the programme from the lack of competitors, and the races followed each other without the painfully long delays which usually mark meetings of this kind. The first race, which was started promptly at 4 o'clock, was -

The Hundred - Yards Dash, First Heat. - Entries : J. E. Cowdin, '79, W. M. Conant, '79, L. B. Harding, '79. Won by Cowdin; time,11 sec. Conant, second. Second Heat. - Entries : W. R. Duncklee, '80, R. Bacon, '80, J. Holmes, '79, B. S. Blanchard, M. S. Won by Bacon; time, 10 1/4 sec. Holmes, second.

The Half-Mile Run was omitted, as no one had entered against T. H. Simmons, '80.

One-Mile Walk. - Entries : F. M. Ware, '79, F. C. Huidekoper, '80, W. P. Learned, '80. Won by Huidekoper; time, 8 min. Learned, second.

One-Hundred-Yards Dash, Final Heat. - Cowdin, Conant, Bacon, and Holmes. Won by Bacon; time, 10 3/4 sec. Cowdin was a very close second.

One-Mile Run. - Entries : J. L. Lamson, '80, C. S. Hanks, '79, G. H. Davis, '79, J. W. Mitchell, '79. Winner, Hanks; time, 5 min. 2 1/2 sec. Mitchell won second place from Lamson by two feet.

Hurdle-Race (120 yards). - J. E. Cowdin, '79, F. B. Keene, '79. Won by Cowdin in 20 1/2 sec.

One-Fourth-Mile-Run. - Entries : W. M. Conant, '79, T. H. Simmons, '80, R. Bacon, '80. Simmons and Bacon had a close race the entire distance. When Simmons was within six yards of the finish he turned his head to see how near was his opponent, threw himself out of his stride, and, tripping, was stunned by a fall within eight feet of the line. Bacon thus won the race in 54 sec.

Bicycle Race (3 miles). - L. Foster, '81, C. A. Parker, '80, F. E. Cabot, '80, A. S. Tubbs, '79, F. Sharon, '80. Foster dropped out at the end of the first mile, and Tubbs and Sharon took no part in the race. First mile (time, 4 min. 4 sec.) Parker ten yards ahead. Second mile (time, 4 min. 17 sec.), Cabot ahead. Third mile, and the race won by Parker, one length ahead. Total time, 12 min. 27 sec.

Potato Race (30 yards). - Entries : J. E. Cowdin, '79, C. Brigham, '79, R. N. Ellis, '80, F. M. Ware, '79, W. G. Twombley, '79, L. B. Harding, '79, W. Austin, '79. Won by Austin in 1 min. 45 sec.

Three-Legged Race (100 yards). - Entries : J. Otis, '81, and F. B. Holder, '81; C. H. W. Foster, '81, and E. W. Atkinson, '81; W. N. Conant, '79, and J. W. Mitchell, '79. Won by Otis and Holder.

The time made by R. Bacon in the quarter-mile run equals the best amateur time made in America; and when it is taken into consideration that the track was heavy and the wind was blowing in the face of the contestants, the records are very satisfactory and encouraging.
