SENIOR CLASS PHOTOGRAPHS.

EDITORS HARVARD HERALD: In reply to your communication in Tuesday's issue signed "'83," I would make the following statement of facts: In the early part of last fall, when sittings were first made, Mr. Baltzly, then operating for Mr. Pach, feared the destruction of the negatives by the Heliotype Company, and so gave it out that two negatives would have to be chosen, one for the class picture and one for the heliotype album. Upon learning this the Heliotype Company, fearing the poorer negatives would be furnished them in each case, assured Mr. Baltzly that the negatives would in no way be injured for printing. Relying on this Mr. Baltzly agreed to furnish the Heliotype Company the regular class negatives, and thus students were relieved from the necessity of securing two satisfactory negatives. It was not until the four negatives furnished for the sample album were returned to Mr. Pach that he found it impossible to print from them, and he very justly refused to furnish the company any further negatives without a guarantee that they would not be harmed. This the Heliotype Company could not give when four pictures were to be printed on a page, and so the $18 album, containing two pictures on a page, was the only thing they could offer. Your correspondent certainly labored under a misunderstanding when he said that he was informed at Pach's studio that no photographs could be ordered after Feb. 1, inasmuch as the "negatives were given to the Heliotype Company, and were destroyed in making the heliotypes." No photographer would ever surrender his negatives this way, for they are his stock in trade. Had your correspondent read carefully the class list sent him in December, he would have seen that no photographs could be ordered after Feb. 15th with a guarantee of delivery on the 10th of June. [Because of the fire the time has been extended.] Nothing more than this was ever meant or ever said.

In closing I would say for the benefit of the class, that no contract exists between us and the Heliotype Company. We deal with them only through Pach Bros., and the committee are satisfied that the best possible arrangements under the circumstances have been made. They regret the mismanagement on the part of the Heliotype Company, but, as is evident, nothing further can be done than has been done.
