NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The president has received the following letter from Scotland: The University of Edinburgh, founded in 1583, having now completed its three-hundredth session, it has been resolved to celebrate its tercentenary in Easter week next, upon the 16th, 17th and 18th April, 1884, and to invite delegates from the most celebrated universities, colleges, and learned societies in the world, to be present, on the occasion. We, the undersigned, therefore respectfully invite the Harvard Colleges to send a representative to be the guest of the University of Edinburgh during the days before mentioned.

We beg to be favored with an early answer to the invitation, and we request that if a delegate from the college is to honor us with his presence, his name and title may as soon as possible be communicated. In name and by authority of the University of Edinburgh.

It is signed by the Rt. Hon. John Ingles, chancellor, and by the principal and rector. In response, the president and fellows have elected Prof. James Russell Lowell to represent Harvard at the coming ceremonies.
