Tug-of-War Teams.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

As the winter meetings are drawing near, strenuous efforts are being made by nearly all the classes to select good tug of-war teams. Eighty-nine is exerting itself particularly, and the candidates practice every afternoon about four o'clock. Fourteen men are trying for positions-J. H. Sears, Stevenson and F. M. Brooks for anchor; Grew, Marquand, Deblois and Green for No. 1; Hunneman, Hunter, Raymond and Bartharlow for No. 2; Endicott, Anderson and Munroe for No. 3. Although these men are doing excellent work and will undoubtedly furnish a good team, it is not at all likely they will be able to hold out against '88's team, which has been invincible since its formation in '85. The team will in all probability consist of last year's veterans. All the following men, however, are candidates: Balch, Ewald and Davidson for anchor; Pease, Baldwin, Crocker, Chase and Blossom for the other positions. Holden will probably try later. Ninety men are either very confident of puling the freshmen, or they take but very little interest in the matter, for as yet no definite steps have been made in selecting a team or in practicing. Of the members of last year's team, Jones, Crehore and Hutchinson, the last two are at present training for their class crew, but will probably pull again this year. Either Amory or Sturgis will be anchor. Ninety-one is evidently making the best of its opportunities. The candidates, eleven in number, have been working with considerable perseverance every day, and from the present outlook the freshman team will not be the last in the contest. The names of the men who are trying are: Baker, Clarke, DeNormandie, Garceau, Lawrence, Mason, McClellen, Nichols and Peckham for rope; Higgins and Tallant for anchor. The eighty-eight team will probably represent the 'Varsity at Mott Haven.
