The candidates for the Yale 'varsity and freshman crews met for the first time last Saturday. For the 'varsity, eighteen men presented themselves as candidates, which number will be added to later by several old men who have not as yet begun work. After a two mile run and exercise on the chest weights, the men were put through a series of leg and body movements, and they were then ready for the tank. The men are divided into two crews, each crew using the tank for half an hour. The positions of the men as they rowed in the boat together with their weights are as follows: First boat-1. Haskell, '92, 164 pounds; and Shank, G. L. S., 120; 2. Ryle, '92, 166; 3 Aiken, '91, 165; and Kidd, '92, 1581/2; 4. Tilson, '91, 1781/2; 5. Klimpke, '92, 162 1-4; 6. Thompson, '92, 1661/2; 7. Crosby, '92, 1771/2; stroke, Swayne, '92, 153. Second boat-1. Rogers, '90 S., 1601/2 pounds; 2. Balliet, '92, 164; 3. Harrison, '90, 158; 4. Jones, '91 S., 164; 5. Heffelfinger, '91, S., 194; 6. Ely, '91, 1661/2; 7. Allen, '90 S., (capt.) 168; stroke, Simms, '90 S., 163. The men were coached by Hartwell, '89 S.

The candidates for the freshman crew will not begin active training until next week. The meeting last Saturday was merely for the purpose of getting the men together in order to explain the work and to give them a few instructions.
