In spite of the rain yesterday afternoon, at half-past three o'clock the football men were practicing on Jarvis field. The ground was in excellent condition as the rain had not fallen in sufficient quantity to soften it. After an hour's energetic play the men were ordered to take a few turns on the running track, while Kimball and Peabody remained to practice kicking. The first few days of training are always the hardest and the countenances of many showed that yesterday was their first hard work after a few months of rest. The number of old players on the field was very small, Kimball, 86, Gilman, '85, Peabodv, '87 and Simpkins, '85 were the only familiar faces of last year's eleven.
All of the old players have not yet begun training, although some of them have already returned to college. Codman will not play this fall. Henry will probable return, but Coroling has left college. Altogether there were but nineteen men on the field, among these several new men who made a very creditable showing. Captain Kimball desire that every man who has played football or has the ability to do so, should begin practice at once, as a large number of candidates in strict training is indispensable to success. This was proved by our experience of last fall, when several men were taken on the regular team from the second eleven.
