Yale Graduate Courses Opened to Women.

The faculty of Yale University have announced that, beginning next autumn, women will be admitted to the post graduate courses, and will be allowed to receive the degree of doctor of philosophy. The idea has been under the faculty's consideration for some time, and has been the subject of much comment. Following is the announcement:

In accordance with the request of a special committee appointed last year for this purpose, the philosophical faculty of Yale University has inaugurated a plan greatly extending post graduate and more strictly university work in that institution.

This plan has been sanctioned by the university corporation.

The feature which most interests the general public, and which will be immediately put into operation next fall is the following, which is believed to be one of the most important movements yet made in this country for the highest education of women.

On and after the next academical year the post graduate courses, with the degree of doctor of philosophy, will be open with out distinction of sex.

It is not the design to establish an annex or other rival of the colleges already existing for women, but to receive the graduates of the colleges and give them as good opportunities for the most advantageous research and education as can be found in Europe.

Other measures for increasing greatly the number of scholarships and fellowships open to all graduates for strengthening Yale's already strong hold upon the smaller Western colleges and for increasing its means for the higher professional education of teachers are in process of preparation.
