Harvard vs. Philips Andover.

Harvard Easily Wins the First Game of the Season.

Over seven hundred people saw the first game of the Harvard nine, on Jarvis field, last Saturday, in which Harvard beat by a score of 26 to 0. The game was well played on the whole, by Harvard, only two errors being made outside of the battery. The Harvard pitchers prevented Andover from getting even a base hit, while Harvard got twelve. This, however, was by no means a sign of good batting by Harvard, since twelve base is only a small fraction of forty-one times at bat. In batting is where Harvard needs the most improvement. The Harvard pitchers did good steady work, striking out sixteen men, and giving only two bases on balls. Nearly all of the runs made were on errors, and other than earned runs.

Andover came to the bat first and went out in one, two three order, for the first three innings. In the first, Hutchinson and Greenway struck out and Murphy knocked a slow grounder to Dickinson. For Harvard, Hovey led off with a hit to short stop, which was muffed enabling him to reach first. He stole second and third and got home on error by catcher. Hallowell got his base on balls, stole second, got to third on a poor attempt to throw him out and tried for home only to be put out at the plate, on Frothingham's hit to second. Frothingham went all the way round on errors. Mason got his base on a hit, but was thrown out in attempting to steal second. Cook flied out to second.

In the second, Millard and Crawford struck out, and Donovan knocked an easy fly to first. For Harvard the second innings was the largest, seven runs being made, only those of Dickinson's and Mason's being earned.

In the third, Hedges, Anderson, and Colgate struck out, for Andover. Hovey got to third on a wild throw by third, of his easy grounder, and got in on a wild pitch. Hallowell got his base on balls, stole second, went to third on the wild pitch, and got home on Frothingham's sacrifice to short. Dickinson and Mason went out, ending the inning.

In the fourth inning, Hutchinson went first on base on balls, to second on a passed ball, to third on Murphy's hit, and was thrown out at the plate by Hallowell, by a beautiful throw of Murphy's hit. Greenway struck out. Murphy was left at second by Willard who knocked an easy grounder to Dickinson at first. For Harvard Cook got his base on balls, and came home on Corbett's base hit, who in turn went home on Cobb's hit, after stealing second, making another earned run. Cobb made a third earned run being sent to second by Bates' sacrifice, and getting home on Hovey's base hit. Hovey and Hallowell were put out, Hovey at second and Hallowell at the plate, leaving Frothingham at second.

The fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings were one-two-three outs for Andover, mostly on strike outs and easy grounders to the infield. In the seventh the only double play of the game was made, Crawford striking out, Clarke dropping the ball and throwing to Dickinson, who in turn caught Millard off base.

The fifth inning for Harvard was long, and uninteresting, six runs being made and none of them earned. In the sixth, Dickinson went out on an easy grounder to second, Mason made a run on a base on balls and a wild pitch, Cook went out at first, got a base hit, stole second and third and came home on an error. Cobb struck out. In the seventh Harvard only scored one, and in the eighth, two.

The ninth inning was opened by Colgate who struck out, Hutchinson went out at first on a slow grounder, Greenway got his base on balls, only to be left on second by Murphy's grounder, to Wiggin.
