Harvard just barely succeeded in defeating Amherst on Saturday, after an exciting though rather poorly played game of ten innings, winning finally by the score, 3 to 2. The attendance was good, and among the spectators was a large delegation of Smith girls, with the crimson conspicuously displayed. Harvard made a run in the first inning, while Amherst scored two in the fifth. With the score 2 to 1 against them, Harvard managed to get in a run on a couple of errors and a sacrifice, in the last half of the ninth, and scored the winning run in the tenth on Highlands two bagger, a sacrifice and an error. Highlands pitched fairly well, for Harvard, although they managed to get more safe hits than we. Cobb supported him behind the bat very well, but made one bad fumble of a thrown ball that let in their second run. Colby, the freshman Amherst pitcher, played a very steady and effective game. Several brilliant plays were made during the game on both sides. Soule's throw to Dickinson, of Sullivan's hit in the fourth, and Frothingham's double play to Dickinson won much applause, on all sides. Brown distinguished himself by a very pretty running catch of Cook's presumable two-bagger, and was only equalled when Gould repeated the exhibition in left field on Frothingham's fly. Highlands completed the brilliant work by his most opportune two-bagger.

Amherst came first to the bat and went out in one, two, three order. Harvard got her first run in this inning. Mason fouled out but was followed by Frothingham, with a sharp clean single to right field. Stealing second he was enabled to score on Cook's fly as Stearns was not quite able to get fairly hold of it. Cook was left at first and for the next three innings the outs were in one, two, three order for Harvard. In the second and third, an Amherst man was left on base, by sharp playing on Harvard's part. In the third, not a man reached first.

The fifth, was Amherst's inning, their only two runs being scored then. With one man out, Brown got a single to left field, went to second on Soule's fumble of Gould's hit and scored on Colby's single out to right. Gould, in the meantime, went to third, and scored on Cobb's fumble of the throw to the plate. This ended the scoring for Amherst, and but once again during the game did a man succeed in getting by first.

Harvard might have had a run the in fifth had Trafford not been foolishly coached to come in on a single to left field. As it was he was easily thrown out at the plate. In the eighth Highlands got to third, and would have scored if Gould had not made his most brilliant catch of Frothingham's long drive to left field, making the third out.

In the ninth inning the excitement was strong. After Amherst had gone out in succession, in her half of the inning, Soule came to the bat for Harvard, and popped one of those twisting flis to Colby, which the latter muffed. Soule reached second on Hunt's muff of a thrown ball, took third on Dickinson's sacrifice and scored the tie run, on Stearn's fumble of Trafford's liner.

With the score tied, Leach struck out. Gould got a clean hit by Soule, and then came Frothingham's most beautiful double play to Dickinson, making the third out. Highlands stepped up and lined out a two bagger, greatly to the surprise of the Amherst men. He took third on a well lined sacrifice by Cobb, and scored the winning run, as Sullivan let Mason's bat grounder through his hands.
