A recent addition to the University of Chicago is the Kent Chemical Laboratory, the gift of Mr. Sidney A. Kent. The laboratory has been constructed and fitted with all appliances adapted to advanced work in chemistry. The whole cost is $235,000.

The furnace room in the basement is fitted with gas furnaces that have the modern air blast for crucible work. The basement also contains a constant temperature room, a machine workshop, a room furnished with steam power for work on a large scale, and large storage rooms.

On the first floor is the main lecture room, with capacity of three hundred, fitted for use in chemistry courses. There are also smaller lecture rooms, a chemistry museum, a large private laboratory, and an apartment for gas analysis. Connected with the lecture rooms are apparatus and preparation rooms.

On the second floor are two laboratories for research and advanced work, three private laboratories for the professors' use, and a balcony for out-of-door work. The library is on this floor and is completely furnished with chemistry text-books and journals.

The third floor has laboratories for general and analytic chemical work, and various other rooms, among which is one specially equipped for optical and photographic work.

The building is ventilated by fans that force in air of a constant temperature, and exhaust the old. The building is lighted throughout by electricity, and power is furnished in the laboratories for use in any kind of electro-chemical work.
