Freshman Football Criticism.

In the class game, the work of the freshman eleven was in one way a most gratifying surprise to the coaches, as they developed an ability to hold their own when hard pressed at their own goal line, an ability which hitherto has been entirely lacking. It will make the next step in their development comparatively easy, as the coaches intend now to turn their attention to getting a uniformly strong defence.

Cabot developed an ability to kick which will stand the team in good stead. His long low drives against the wind would have done credit to any 'varsity player.

As a whole the team played a sandy, uphill game against older, heavier, and more experienced men, under very trying conditions. They are not quick at starting, do not block off after the ball is carried beyond the line, and are a little vague about some of the plays," not having gained the snap and precision necessary to make each play successful.

Scott is a good captain; thoughtful, painstaking, and masterly. His part of the work is always done. He does not play enough of a kicking game, but this is largely due to the fact that as yet he has had no sure kicker on the team. This difficulty is now past. He does not always get into the interference but he knows how, and will be there when the crisis comes.

Redpath shows steady fine playing. He catches well, uses his head and rushes well. He is never hurt and always begins to play best toward the end of the game, when his opponents are getting tired. He is still a little light for rush line halfback when the other side has the ball , but he is very apt to drop on the ball when it is dropped, and to get well into the plays.

Cabot plays the best all-round game on the team. His tackling, rushing, kicking, catching and interference leave little to be desired, and he has been improving steadily. There are few gains round his end of the line when the other side has the ball.

Fincke has not improved as he should and will have to yield to Manning. He is very speedy and occasionally tackles and catches well, but he does not get into the plays; his interference is poor and he can not seem to get any distance into his kicks in match games.

Manning plays hard, low and well. His interference and his tackling are good, but his kicking is poor.

Hennen, at centre, is strong and makes good holes. He does not always get the ball back well, and is poor on the defensive, seldom getting through and not covering his position regularly.

Hoague is slow and he also has a tendency to run back to stop end plays. He blocks well and is hard to pass. He must improve.

Woodward is too light for his position, but plays well, getting into the plays, using his head and steadily improving.

Fuller plays regularly and hard. He has not yet learned to meet an interference low enough, but is gradually improving. He carries the ball well, keeping his feet and meeting the line hard and low.

Ames has sprung his collar bone and has been laid off since Thursday. He was a steady, hard player, not sure on the defense, and occasionally allows the interference to get by him, but always rushes well and keeps his head on the game. He is apt to get blocked out.

Holmes has been irregular, but plays a hard game, and tackles well.

Bull has improved greatly and will soon be a good end. He gets down on kicks and rarely lets a man get by. He has some dash in his play.

Woods plays steadily and well; he tackles hard and low and does not seem to be troubled by interference. With Cabot and Fuller he makes a very strong line on the left.

Of the substitutes, Adams and Flint are both good backs, Wadsworth a fair end, Rice a good tackle, and Burrage a fair tackle or guard. Scull plays a first class end, but has been sick. Huiskamp is good at times. Hayes tackles well.
