How the Different Teams are Progressing.

The training for the crew at the University of Pennsylvania began last Saturday under the recently elected captain, Bull. To prevent overcrowding of the squad by men of too light build ever to occupy a seat in the 'varsity boat, a weight limit for candidates has been set this year at 160 pounds. For the past week the work has been confined to regular running and gymnastic exercises, intended to put the men into good physical shape for the harder training later, when the tank is ready for occupation and the trainer chosen. The work on the tank in its location on the new athletic grounds is to be pushed on so rapidly that its completion is expected as early as the candidates will be prepared to use it.

The baseball candidates were also called out about a week ago by Captain Blakeley. Until the examinations are over, the squad will not reach its final proportions, but some twenty new men, with many of the old players, already at work, and the close competition for the various positions will doubtless develope a strong team. One point, at least, in which there will be a great gain over last year is in the battery. Even the little training that has been done so far shows that there is valuable material available for those positions; and the same is true of the rest of the field. The coaching is being done by Mr. Arthur Irwin. Pennsylvania confidently expects to repeat her excellent baseball record of last year.

The active season in track athletics will date from today. There have been a number of men training with Mr. Bryan before this but not enough to make up a satisfactory team. Yesterday afternoon, acting on Harvard's example, a meeting of all possible candidates was held, at which addresses were given by several prominent alumni. Hereafter work will be carried on earnestly and steadily. The question of a dual meeting with Princeton, proposed by Pennsylvania, remains unsettled. Pennsylvania, however, fears that Princeton will refuse to meet her, on the ground that representation on the teams should be strictly collegiate, instead of from the whole university.

The committee on cricket, tennis and shooting will make an attempt this year to revive the failing interest in shooting by holding two matches in the spring, the winners of which will be chosen to represent the university in the intercollegiate match next fall. It is also hoped to get a strong couple of tennis players, and to that end competitive contests will be held during the spring in this sport as well. For the cricket team twenty men are at present available and more are expected to present themselves.
