‘The Architect of the Whole Plan’: Harvard Law Graduate Ken Chesebro’s Path to Jan. 6
About twenty - five men met in Lawrence 1 last evening to consider the advisability of forming a gymnastic association. Professor Shaler was made chairman of the meeting, and W. F. Garcelon, secretary. Dr. Sargent spoke first, showing how, with the development of competitive sports and light gynastics, interest in heavy gymnastics has steadily decreased. He dwelt on the benefits of hard, regular gymnasium work, and outlined the plan of a gymnastic association - an organization made up of several teams, which would contest at public meetings.
Professor Byerly spoke of the advantages of heavy gymnastics; Professor James and Dr. Fitz emphasized the importance of the close connection between healthy bodies and good brain work, and upheld gymnastic exercises as being one of the best means of keeping in thoroughly good condition. Professor Shaler joined with them in heartily commending the plan of forming a gymnastic association here, illustrating the advantage of steady physical exercise from his own experience.
A resolution favoring the formation of a gymnastic association was then unanimously passed. W. F. Garcelon L. S. and F. T. Lord '97 were chosen delegates to the meeting which is to be held at the B. A. A. rooms on March 12 for the organization of a general gymnastic association. The meeting then adjourned, having decided to meet again and organize some time next spring.
