NEWELL CLUB ROWING

Criticism of the Eights which will Compete in the Dual Races.

The Newel crews have suffered more than the Weld through frequent changes in the order of the boats, but have as a whole shown great improvement during the last week. This is probably due greatly to the efforts of several coaches, who since the arrival of the launch have watched the work of the eights. The Senior crew has been under the eye of Mr. E. C. Storrow, while Mr. J. J. Storrow has taken charge of 1902. D. M. Goodrich '98 has been coaching the Law School.

The Law School eight has not shaken well together, so that the time and catch are weak. The outboard work is fairly smooth, though not yet uniform. In spite of these faults the crew has shown some speed, and Blake at stroke has succeeded in getting a good beat in rowing. The order follows: Stroke, Blake (capt.); 7, Sheafe; 6, Swift; 5, Burden; 4, Marvin; 3, Warner; 2, Byrd; bow, Parker; cox., Watson '01.

1900 has thus far had difficulty in keeping the boat on an even keel and the blade work has been in places a trifle ragged; yesterday, however, the crew was much more together and a better drive was noticeable throughout the boat. A two-mile brush with the Weld Law School eight resulted in a dead heat. Stroke, Harding (capt.); 7, Higginson; 6, Fitzgerald; 5, Biddle; 4, Gale; 3, Gray; 2, Byrd; bow, Bolling; cox., Goodridge.

The Juniors, in spite of several changes, show a remarkable lot of snap and dash, no less than their opponents at the Weld, and are well together. The chief fault at present is a tendency to dive out forward at the full swing, as well as a little rushing of the slides. Cunningham has lately been moved from stroke of the second crew to 2 in the first. The make-up follows: Stroke, Gerrish; 7, J. Lawrence (capt.); 6, Gilchrist; 5, McConnell; 4, Peyton; 3, Henderson; 2, Cunningham; bow, Hawkins; cox., Howe.

The Sophomores have shown as much improvement as any crew on the river, Brownell having put some of the dash into the crew that he secured in the Freshman race with Yale last June. The individual faults are chiefly clipping and bringing in the hands too low at the finish, also a marked tendency to rush the slides and hang at the full reach is noticeable. The crew has lately been greatly strengthened by the return of Bullard to 6, Atkinson being moved back to 2 to replace Champollion, but yesterday Campbell at 3 was ill and obliged to cede his place to Merritt. It is uncertain whether his illness will prevent him from rowing in the race on Friday. The present order is: Stroke, Brownell (capt.); 7, Goodell; 6, Bullard; 5, Platt; 4, R. Lawrence; 3, Merritt; 2, Atkinson; bow, Morris; cox., Jackson.
