HARVARD, 19; COLUMBIA, 4.

Hard Hitting Wins the Game. -- Loose Fielding on both Sides.

The University nine defeated Columbia Saturday afternoon by making twenty-two hits against poor pitching and by taking advantage of Columbia's fielding errors. Harvard made seven errors, some of which were inexcusable, and showed a tendency to go to pieces at critical times in the infield. Columbia's run in the second inning was due to Clarke's wild throw and Fincke's fumble of an easy grounder. In the seventh inning Fincke missed two thrown balls and Clarke one, allowing two runs to be scored. Loughlin's and Coolidge's errors were equally inexcusable, but did not happen to result in runs. The nine made more hits than in any previous game this year, but this was largely due to the weakness of the opposing pitcher.

In six innings Columbia made but three scattered hits off Stillman. McDonald allowed three hits in the seventh inning, but settled down and pitched the last two innings in better form. Since Reid's leg gave him some trouble Milne went in to catch and did very good work, catching several fouls and throwing well to bases. Coolidge was back at short, but was not up to his form in the field, although he batted well.
