The Macmillan Company has recently published a new book by Dr. Francis G. Peabody, entitled "Jesus Christ and the Social Question." Dr. Peabody presents a study of the teachings of Jesus in their relation to men as members of society and to the great social and civic problems of the world. Jesus Christ came not to construct society, but to inspire men to fashion it; his spirit is meant first to quicken men in realization of their mutual responsibility and to work through them the upbuilding of the social structure.

Dr. Peabody believes that Christ taught the sanctity of family life and, in general the wrong of divorce. He did not condemn the possession of riches and property and He was not a communist; He saw in wealth no sin, but a grave, and it might be, a sacred responsibility.

In civic and industrial questions he taught that regard for character was the fundamental basis for decision.

Dr. Peabody's book is an inspiring discussion of a subjects of which the interest should be as general as it is vital.
