The Eleven Scores Only in First Half.--Substitutes Outplayed by Wesleyan.

The Wesleyan football team was defeated by the University eleven yesterday by a score of 35 to 5. Wesleyan had the weakest team that has played on Soldiers Field this season, but nevertheless by means of well-executed trick plays managed to make a number of long runs and eventually a touchdown. But on the defense the Wesleyan eleven was entirely helpless and, during the first half, owing partly to Harvard's improved attack, was unable to offer any effective resistance to the plays which resulted in the University team's five touchdowns and goal from the field. The most discouraging part of the game was the way the substitutes, who were put in at the beginning of the second half, not only failed to score themselves but were fooled repeatedly on simple plays and allowed their opponents to score. There were a great many long runs but the most sensational was one of 75 yards made by Marshall on a kick-off.

The playing of the University team during the first half was by far the best it has done up to this time, but showed a great lack of development. A new formation in which Mills and Jones were used to advance the ball proved to be the most certain ground-gainer the team has yet had, though owing to the short time it has been practiced it did not work smoothly enough to make possible anything but medium advances. Fumbling again interfered with the playing of the team and the many penalties imposed for holding and similar offences amounted to a considerable number of yards. In the second half, the showing was even poorer than it has been in several of the earlier games and the men were easily handled by the lighter Wesleyan players. The line was cut to pieces on every play, and the backs started so unevenly and followed their interference so little that they were frequently tackled for a loss.

Kernan, Bowditch, King, Knowles, Barnard and Marshall all played well, but outside of them, the team, as individuals, did nothing remarkable. Whitwell, as usual, resorted to rough tactics, and did practically nothing to help the team. Stillman showed more fight than he has before, but his slowness and fumbling were entirely too costly.

Harvard started in to make a score at the very beginning of the game and kept adding to it at intervals of a few minutes throughout the first half. Wesley an could not gain after the kick-off and punted into Harvard's territory. From the 35 yard line, the University team carried the ball on short gains by Jones, Mills, Kernan and Leatherbee well beyond the centre of the field. Kernan then ran 28 yards around right end. Leatherbee made five yards more and Stillman, aided by King and Barnard, was pulled from the ten yard line through centre for a touchdown. Barnard kicked goal. The next touchdown was made in an even shorter time than it took for the first one, and after a 33 yards run from kick-off by Mills, another of 38 yards by Leatherbee and several short advances by the other backs, Leatherbee crossed the goal line. Another goal by Barnard made the score: Harvard, 12; Wesleyan, 0.

Marshall made his brilliant 75 yards run on the next kick-off and was only prevented from scoring a touchdown by a diving tackle from behind which stopped him on the 15 yard line. In three plays the ball was carried over by Stillman. Barnard again kicked goal. After the next kick-off several trick plays were tackled for a loss and Harvard finally secured the ball on a punt on Wesleyan's 40 yard line. Kernan then went around right end behind good interference for the fourth touchdown. Barnard kicked goal. Harvard, 24; Wesleyan, 0. The last touchdown was made by forcing the ball 90 yards straight down the field. Most of this distance was covered by Knowles, who took Kernan's place at left halfback and made two runs of more than 30 yards each. On the last one, he was tackled just under the goal posts and Leatherbee made the touchdown on the next play. Marshall completed Harvard's score by kicking a goal from the field while standing on the 22 yard line, and the half ended a few minutes later when Knowles, on a 20 yards run around right end, carried the ball well into Wesleyan's territory.

In the second half the only score was made by Wesleyan soon after play began. Stillman returned the kick-off to the centre of the field. Forbes then went around left end on a delayed pass and was tackled by Daly on the 10 yard line. Failing to gain, a try for a field goal was made, but the ball was blocked. It was picked up by Forbes, however, who went around the left side of the scrimmage and was forced outside just before crossing the goal line. On the following play through centre. Forbes made the touchdown. The goal was missed. During the remainder of the half, one touchdown was lost by Harvard on account of Stillman's fumble as he was passing under the goal, and time was called with the ball on Wesleyan's 7 yard line.
