The American universities defeated the English in the fourth international chess match held at the Boston Athletic Association Friday and Saturday by the score of 4 1-2 to 1 1-2 games. Although the match was closely fought throughout, the Americans after the first day of playing clearly had the advantage.
On Friday Adams of Yale was defeated by Roome of Oxford, Rice of Harvard and Keeler of Columbia were even with their opponents, and Sawin of Yale, Sewall of Columbia, and Hunt of Princeton had an advantage. On Saturday, Sawin, Sewall, Rice and Hunt won their games and Keeler's was drawn. The game between Rice and Webb of Cambridge was by far the closest and most interesting one in the match.
The Rice cup, the trophy of the international matches, which has been won twice by the English universities, will be sent to this country immediately and will be exhibited at each of the four universities for a month, after which it will be entrusted to the B. A. A.
