GRADED RACES TODAY.

The races between the first three graded crews at the Weld and Newell will be rowed this afternoon over the regular course down-stream from the Longwood bridge to the Union Boat House, beginning at 5.30 o'clock. There will be two separate heats, the first one, between the second and third crews, at 5.30; the two first crews will follow at 5.50. The positions of the crews in the first race, counting from the Beacon street wall, will be: Third Newell, Second Weld, Third Weld, Second Newell. In the second race, the Weld crew will have the course nearest the Cambridge side of the river.

The chief interest in the races will be centered upon the contest between the two first crews, as they are to represent Harvard against Annapolis and Cornell in the latter part of this month.

The Weld crew recently lost a strong man in Jackson at six, who was forced to stop on account of an injury. The weakest spot in the boat all along, however, has been seven. George has now been picked as the best man for the place and is doing well. Wolcott rows well at stroke, keeping an even beat and driving the men well behind him.

The first Newell suffered a severe loss, when Brownell was taken from stroke to row on the University squad. With the change at stroke it took a decided slump, due more to loss of confidence than to any particular fault with Boardman who was put in Brownell's place.

The second and third crews are rowing fairly well but are not nearly so strong as the first crews. These two Newell crews have been particularly unfortunate, owing to the number of changes made in their orders within the last few days, a fact which should give the Weld boats a slight advantage.
