The University nine defeated Andover yesterday in a very close game, by a score of 2 to 0.

Harvard was outplayed in every department except pitching. Clarkson's pitching was the only thing which saved the game. The batting was wretched; the men were flustered at the bat and made only six hits against one of Andover's weaker pitchers. They hit to the infield, sent a few flies to the outfield, and struck out three times. As the batting stands at present Harvard must either shut out her opponents or lose.

Andover's play was errorless and at times brilliant; but at the bat the team was prevented from scoring by Clarkson, who struck out twelve men and showed perfect control in critical places, especially in the fifth inning, when Andover had men on second and third bases, with no one out. Their six hits were kept well scattered.

Coolidge was prevented from playing on account of the injury to his shoulder received in the Colby game. At shortstop Skilton fumbled badly, making Harvard's two errors. Randall's work was not satisfactory. He allowed a runner to beat him out to first on a slow ground ball; and in turn reached first too late, when he should have been safe. H. Kernan played well in the field, covering a great deal of ground; and showed good form at the bat, opening the eighth inning with a clean hit, and scoring one of the runs.

Up to the seventh inning Harvard was retired practically in regular order. Stillman opened the seventh with a base on balls, and reached second on a wild pitch. Randall then hit to pitcher and was put out at first, Stillman reaching third, and scoring on a hit over shortstop by Skilton. In the eighth H. Kernan reached first base on a hit, was advanced to second by Carr's sacrifice and came home on a hit by Clarkson.
